WORKS

A multidisciplinary artist-in-residence program.

WORKS is a transformative non-profit artists-in-residence program in the heart of Gowanus, Brooklyn. Our large-scale metal fabrication facility within the Powerhouse Arts Building is a bold playground for innovation and creativity. Here, artists gain unparalleled access to cutting-edge equipment and expert technical support.

We believe that when artists have access to a wide range of tools, ample space, and the luxury of time, they can push the boundaries of what's possible. We understand that true innovation flourishes when diverse perspectives come together, and we welcome creatives from around the globe. Whether you're a sculptor, painter, designer, or creator working across multifaceted mediums, we invite you to reimagine your process at WORKS.

Program Timeline

The residency spans 12 weeks, and it welcomes artists from around the world committed to realizing sculptural works.

The residency has three stages:

  • During this phase, residents collaborate with the design and engineering team to develop their concept. Artists work on 3D modeling and CAD drawings, identifying suitable materials and the required fabrication techniques.

  • Artists then move into the metal workshop, where they receive hands-on, technique-led support to bring their project to fruition. This phase allows residents to explore and extend the potential of metal as a medium, encouraging cross-disciplinary material use, including metal, wood, glass, resin, and ceramics.

  • At the residency’s conclusion, the artists will have the opportunity to present their completed works in an exhibition at Powerhouse Arts, featuring a public opening, artist talks, and roundtable discussions across multiple disciplines.

Artist Eligibility

The WORKS Artist Residency is open to emerging and mid-career sculptors worldwide who demonstrate both a need and a compelling artistic vision.

The selection criteria prioritize:

  • Quality and originality of the applicant’s work.

  • The extent to which the artist’s project aligns with the residency’s resources and objectives.

  • Special consideration for low-income artists who struggle to access advanced facilities and secure funding or income to advance their practice.

  • We encourage applications from artists of diverse backgrounds to foster an inclusive and dynamic creative environment.

  • Artists from disadvantaged communities will be prioritized.

  • We strive to make our facilities accessible to artists with physical disabilities and are committed to providing the necessary accommodations to support their creative processes.
